At Howard Lions Cycling Club, we are dedicated to promoting youth mountain biking in a safe and supportive environment. We aim to develop character, skills, fitness and confidence in our riders, fostering a love for the sport that lasts a lifetime.
We take all levels of riders. The team is open to girls and boys who attend Howard High School. We do not have try outs and no one gets cut from the team. We are an inclusive and inviting team where we enjoy riding our bikes and pushing ourselves to achieve goals. Everyone shows up just as they are to have fun. Some kids race and some kids just ride bikes. We fully embrace core values of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA)
Our coaches are licensed through our league, Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL) and are familiar with the best coaching practices. Training includes risk management, team management, ride management, youth sports psychology, and much more. Team events, practices, and races are fully insured through MICL.
With the support of the Howard Lions Pride Boosters and athletic director Dr. Lauer, we operate as a club team. All of our funds for the teams are raised by the team and by our wonderful sponsors.
New athletes who would like to come out, meet the team and go for a ride are welcome to take advantage of the "Try It Out" program. Parents can complete a one-time waiver form, bring it to a team practice, and the athlete can ride with the team at no cost. Please email us if you are interested.
GRiT (Girls Riding Together) program is a NICA national initiative aimed at increasing the overall participation rate of more female student-athletes and female coaches in NICA.
Through GRiT, we create the safe spaces and opportunities necessary for women and girls to engage, build confidence, belong, and thrive as riders and humans.

We also get great sponsorship from Patapsco Bicycles in Elkridge!!
A long time cycling enthusiast, racer, and triathlete, Coach Bill knows what it takes to get across that finish line. He brings a ton of knowledge and experience to the team.
Coach Dan has been cycling since 1999 and "raced" for 10 years. Now he just loves riding his bike in the woods and passing down his enthusiasm to the student athletes.
Coach Jack has been cycling for the past 12 years and enjoys any trail that involves more downhill than uphill, like most people.
Coach Sadiq has been an avid mountain biker since the mid 90’s. His first foray into mountain biking was by taking an old Huffy hybrid into Frick Park in Pittsburgh with steep single track trails. He survived to tell the tail (and then bought a mountain bike) and there was no looking back. He enjoys riding with his 2 sons who are both
Coach Sadiq has been an avid mountain biker since the mid 90’s. His first foray into mountain biking was by taking an old Huffy hybrid into Frick Park in Pittsburgh with steep single track trails. He survived to tell the tail (and then bought a mountain bike) and there was no looking back. He enjoys riding with his 2 sons who are both in the Howard Cycling club, and he enjoys teaching NICA riding skills to the student athletes.
Coach Mike has been riding the local trails (and many others) since his college days. Although his own kids graduated from Howard a few years ago, he still enjoys giving back to the local cycling community and helping NICA introduce a new generation of aspiring cyclists to a sport that's given him a lifetime of adventures, challenges, and smiles.
Coach Larry’s been sending it since the mid-90s, when he first caught the mountain biking bug back in high school. Obsessed with dirt, drops, and dialed lines, he bought his first house just to be near Patapsco Valley State Park—so he could rip straight from his home and drop into the woods. Coach Larry’s been sending it since the mid-90s, when he first caught the mountain biking bug back in high school. Obsessed with dirt, drops, and dialed lines, he bought his first house just to be near Patapsco Valley State Park—so he could rip straight from his home and drop into the woods. With decades of gnarly rides under his belt and a deep love for the sport, Coach Larry brings max stoke, big energy, and serious trail cred every time he rolls out.
Coach Joe has been an active cyclist for over 30 years and enjoys road riding, mountain biking, and any adventure on a bike. Joe has been active in the Patapsco Trail community for the past 10 years.
Coach Austin was one of our student athlete founders of the team. Once he graduated, he joined the coaching ranks and has been a great leader for the team. He is able to keep all of our bikes in tip top shape in a pinch with is awesome mechanic skills, amazing problem solving skills, and a cool and calm demeanor. And he can send it with the best of them.
